MAKING 10 TO ADD 8 PORTFOLIO
Unit 4, Lesson 5
Use this link to open the spreadsheet. Please note that there are several tabs at the bottom of the spreadsheet where you'll need to switch between pages.
- In the workbook, instruct your student to click on the tab titled Making 10 to Add 8.
- Read the directions at the top with your student. Explain that they will use the two ten-frames to help them add each problem. The top ten-frame shows 8. The bottom ten-frame shows the second addend being added. To complete the problem, they should move two cells from the bottom ten-frame to the top ten-frame. To do this, they will click on the blank cell on the top ten-frame, and then select the blue color from the Fill drop-down menu. Since they added two to the top ten-frame, they need to take two away from the bottom ten-frame. To remove one cell, they should click on one of the blue cells, select the Fill drop-down menu, and choose No Fill. Now the two ten-frames should show 10 + _____ (the second addend). Your student should type the new addition problem underneath the original and complete the problem.
- To help your student understand the process, show them the example problem. Show them how in the example, two cells were moved from the bottom ten-frame to the top ten-frame to show 10 + 1 = 11.
- Instruct your student to complete questions 2–4 in the same manner. Check their answers when they are finished.
- Instruct your student to click on the tab titled Practice Making 10 to Add 8.
- With your student, read the directions at the top. Explain that in this activity, they will be using the same method of making 10 to add 8 as was done in the previous activity. Your student will use the ten-frames to complete each addition problem and will type the answer in the empty space provided. Explain that they will be using the same ten-frames to complete each problem, so they will have multiple opportunities to use the Fill drop-down menu.
- Make sure they type the answer in column E after each problem. Check their answers when they are finished.

The goals will be typed in the right-hand column. Have them type the long-term goal in the first row as the first goal.
- Instruct them to fill in the first row with a light color. To fill in the row, tell your student to select the writing in the first row. Click on the Fill drop-down menu and select a light color so the words are still visible.
